| Found in the savannahs of West Africa and across the Indian Subcontinent. Their diet consists of bugs, small reptiles and birds. Although not the most venomous snake, the carpet viper is responsible for more human deaths than any other predator - over 20,000 a year. Small and bad tempered they strike without provocation. Their venom is hemotoxic i.e. it causes spontaneous internal bleeding. Without treatment 20 % of victims die and 5 % require amputations. |
