Best remembered for helping to establish tennis as a professional sport and, controversially, campaigning for equal prize money for women, Billie Jean won 40 grand slam titles in singles, doubles and mixed doubles but only one of her five Grand Slam finals against great rival Margaret Court. In 1973 she beat former men's World #1 Bobby Riggs in an exhibition match albeit he was 53 years old. Billie Jean announced he retirement two years later, after winning her sixth Wimbledon title but was back court months later. |
