| There are 35 species of funnel web spiders and the Australian funnel web is the most dangerous. 13 fatalities have been recorded and curiously all the deaths were from male spider bites. Fortunately funnel webs they are only found in coastal and mountain regions of Australia and are instantly recognisable due to their stocky bodies, shiny heads and fangs that point down. Females are larger than males but the venom produced by males is six times more toxic. Funnel webs eat insects, lizards and frogs. |
