The deadliest animal in history, mosquitos carry malaria in their saliva, killing more than one million people every year. Mosquitos feed on nectar and water and are drawn to the odour of humans. Only females 'bite'. They sink their proboscis, a straw like part of their mouth, through the skin looking for blood vessels then release their saliva into the wound and suck up the blood. They use the protein and iron found in blood to make eggs. Mosquitos live in most hot, humid environments around the world. |
